My primary input devices for my day-to-day work in MacOS are keyboard and mouse. I’ve got the macbook closed and docked (which means no touchID, very annoying!).
That also means that I use the classic alt+tab (or cmd+tab on Mac) shortcut to change windows. Now, I’m not sure if you guys have ever used Windows before, but man, it has Mac beat on this functionality. The default MacOS way is to change APPs instead of windows, and THEN use a different shortcut (cmd+~) to change windows within that app.
OR you can alt+tab and then while holding it, navigate with the arrow keys until you get to your app and THEN press down arrow to see that app’s windows.
Either way, it’s clunky as hell and requires 2 hands for window switching. They probably will never change this because these days 90% of Mac users have the trackpad with a 4 finger up swipe to change windows.
Well, I wanted the best of both worlds. I want to work on Mac, but cmd+tab to switch WINDOWS. And so, I started using an amazing app called Alt+Tab. However, Alt+Tab was not perfect. It’s leaned heavily into liquid glass and when I disabled liquid glass, it’s background was lost.
So in the words of MyMechanics (my favorite restoration youtube channel), “I make a new one”.
I wrote go_fish as a very lightweight and fast window switcher in the same vein as Alt+Tab. It’s a simple as it gets while still working reliably on MacOS.
Cmd+tab will bring up a grid of windows (sorted either by recent usage or alphabetically by app name). Hold cmd and tab to your window, then release to switch.
It also allows you to see minimized apps with no windows and you can kill apps from the grid if you wish.
As with all of my other apps, it’s been relentlessly used by me, and I’d say it’s battle tested and highly optimized. If you want to check it out, you can find it on Github here: https://github.com/IANatCAMBIO/Go_Fish
